More and more evidence is
being discovered, that the physical basis of
obesity lies in the master gland of the brain
called the hypothalamus. This is
the gland which controls the female hormone
cycle, the amount of thyroid hormone which is
released from moment to moment, the amount of
cortisone hormone which is released from the
adrenal gland, and many others. Leptin is
a hormone made in fat cells which makes us eat
more when the signal does not get to the brain
that "enough" leptin is being made.
It is a fact that genetics play a
huge role in determining our weight, what we do
in our life also contributes to the outcome.
While our basic weight in life is inherited, what
we actually get is a weight-range. We each have a
set point thermostat which is
genetically determined. This control causes us to
return to our inherited weight range if we gain
or lose. We can, however, alter this setting,
most easily in the upward direction. If we eat a
lot and gain weight, and keep it on for some
time, our Set-Point Thermostat will move up to
the new weight. Quickly re-losing the weight
seems, to avoid this resetting of the Set-Point
Thermostat. If you wait too long, your Thermostat
will move up to your new weight and losing
becomes extremely hard. Thus Weight Quickly
Gained is best Quickly Lost !
Exercise
Exercise has to be an important aspect of
management of obesity. Most people who are
sedentary and begin to exercise make the mistake
of trying to do a lot right away. If you are
under 30 years old you might be able to do this.
Most people stop exercising and never restart.
The safe and sure way is to exercise for less
than you feel you can do for about 2-3 weeks. You
should not not rush to reach a goal but to
establish a pattern of healthy activity you can
live with for the rest of your life. Try several
different things. Walking is a great way to
start. Then you can try a bicycle or walking up
and down hills. Remember, you are in no rush to
get anywhere. Stroll along and smell the flowers.
If you work up to a fast walking in a year or so,
that's soon enough. Keep in mind you have no rush
to arrive anywhere with this walking. It's the
journey that is important.
Diet
Diet is another
important aspect of obesity management. There is
no such thing as a bad food. If you have no
medical condition other than obesity, then there
are no specific foods you need to avoid. It is
advisable to adopt a low fat way of eating as a
lifestyle so as to keep off weight gain. Long
term exercising and low-fat eating is the way to
keeping the weight off.
Eat Garlic to
loose weight.
A study in Israel
found that eating garlic may help you in losing weight. At
study by the institute for high blood pressure at Seba
Hospital near Tel Aviv, found that Allicin, present in
the garlic prevents weight gain among animals fed with sugary
feed.
